The National Portrait Gallery tells the story of Britain through portraits, using art to bring history to life and explore living today.
Located in central London, it houses the greatest collection of portraits in the world. From global icons, to unsung heroes, the Gallery is about the personalities that have shaped, and continue to shape, our nation.
Now more than ever, the National Portrait Gallery has a unique role to inspire and enrich society through enabling deeper connections with the nation’s stories — to be the living portrait of Britain.
The first portrait to enter the Collection when the Gallery was founded in 1856 was not of a monarch or a politician but of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare (featured in this Experience), whose achievements were the result of his own extraordinary talent and effort.
Today, the Gallery continues to encourage its audiences to find inspiration in the artworks and human stories within the Collection.
